When to surf in Europe: a season by season guide

Europe has year-round surf, but not year-round surf for everyone. The same coastline can be a gentle classroom in July and a serious, experts-only wave in January. Here is how the year actually breaks down.
Summer, June to September: the learning season
Small, friendly swells, warm water, long days. This is when beach breaks in Portugal, southwest France and northern Spain are at their most forgiving, and it is the best window for a first surf trip. The trade-off is crowds: popular peaks get busy, and camps fill up months ahead. Book early, and favour camps that travel to quieter spots rather than walking to the main beach.
Autumn, September to November: the prize
Ask any European surfer for their favourite months and they will say September and October. The first proper Atlantic swells arrive while the water and the air are still warm, the summer crowds go home, and every level gets something: protected bays stay small for improvers while open beaches turn on for the experienced. If you can only take one surf trip a year and you have some experience, take it in autumn.
Winter, December to March: the serious season
Big swells, short days, cold water. Mainland Europe in winter is for confident intermediates and up, with proper wetsuits and realistic expectations. The exception is the Canary Islands: volcanic reefs, air around twenty degrees and the swell energy of the open Atlantic without the deep cold. This is why the Canaries are the standard European winter escape, for beginners in the right bays as much as for experts on the reefs.
Spring, April to May: the quiet bargain
Spring is inconsistent, and that is exactly why it is underrated. Swells alternate between leftover winter energy and summer calm, lineups are empty, and prices are at their lowest. For improvers who already handle a bit of size, a spring week in Portugal or the Basque Country often means surfing good waves nearly alone.
